Join the Bay area Medical Society Coalition for a FREE CME 4-part webinar series focused on understanding and dismantling harmful behaviors in healthcare that disproportionately affect health outcomes for patients from vulnerable communities. Through a combination of robust presentations from prestigious practitioners on race, gender, and equity in healthcare, this series aims to highlight the importance of diversity and inclusion, and to arm you with the skills and language to facilitate better patient outcomes.

Studies show that African American children suffer higher rates of illness and death from chronic diseases than non-Hispanic white children. Once they become adults, they are 50% more likely to die prematurely. The root causes for these disparities lie in what the World Health Organization refers to as the social determinants of health: conditions in which people are born, grow, live, work and age. These disparities, when combined with implicit bias in patient care, result in less accurate diagnoses, curtailed treatment options, less pain management, and deadly patient outcomes.

Register for session 1 with Dr. Hairston on September 3rd, 6:30pm to learn how to:

  • Define systemic racism and implicit bias and its role in healthcare inequities.
  • Recognize ways to reduce and eliminate your own bias in delivering healthcare to communities of color.
  • Deconstruct social determinants of health and other factors contributing to disproportionate health outcomes for communities of color.
  • Learn specific techniques to screen patients for stress and trauma and reduce bias in patient interactions
